The Power of Creativity_ Paris Design Week
The Power of Feeling
I noticed that all of the artists use futuristic elements and materials in their designs, such as light, neon light, glass, metal, and paper. Most designs are modern gray or saturated colors, such as red, orange, and yellow. I believe all of the designers' artwork attempts to incorporate futuristic elements with specific social issues.
The “Innovated” Manipulation
The designers intend to modify their object into a particular shape or create unexpected objects to convey the innovation theme. For example, I see designers using paper to make a functional chair. One designer also created a foldable chair. The foldable chair possessed a function that suited the Parisian's living style. The main requirement for an innovative design is the ability to be differentiated regarding function or look. Both foldable chairs and paper chairs satisfy the requirement.
I love the artist's use of recycled paper to create a chair at the last festival of the class visit. First of all, I love the idea of recycling paper. I believe solving sustainability and environmental issues is a big part of innovating fashion. Second, the paper functional chair is a very new concept. I had never seen anyone create a stable chair from paper, nor did I know of any chair design that looked like the one at the festival. The fact that the concept of a paper chair is eye-catching already satisfies the requirement to consider it an innovative object.
Non-futuristic wood for innovation
This fair opened my eyes to different design concepts using unexpected materials and manipulation methods. I also found it very interesting how some designers attempted to use non-futuristic materials for their innovation projects.
The wood project at the first fair of the class visit is also my favorite. Surprisingly, the artist used no bright colors or different materials in his manipulation. The artist only carves the wood for his design. It is incredible how the artist manipulates the source of light and the direction of light to match the theme of innovation. Additionally, through the manipulation of light, the artist did a good job incorporating the natural vibe of wood and the futuristic theme. The artist did a good job further exploring and manipulating the most straightforward and oldest material for the project.
The art of feeling
Moreover, the wood designer is among the few designers who show people their making process at the festival. The designer is displaying the design process as a performance. The new concept of letting the audience look at the behind-the-scenes process is another way of showing innovation to the audience. I love that the artist attempts to establish a closer connection with the audience. Through the scene process, the audience will be able to understand the background of the design. The audience will be able to resonate and feel the art. The artist's ability to make the audience feel certain emotion is a huge success.
